Welcome to our Hedgehog's class page.
Hello!

General Information
We ask parents and carers to return the home / school diary each day, as this will enable the class teacher to provide comments and information about your child’s day in school. If there are particular things you wish to be informed about, please speak with me.
We do kindly ask for a £2 donation to class funds each week. This goes towards playing for snack, cookery ingredients, single use sensory play, for example pasta, cornflour for gloop, slime, rice, etc and items for weekly phonics sessions. This contribution enables us to plan fun and engaging lessons for your child to help them learn in a multi sensory way and reach their potential.
Individual Education Plan(IEP’s)
This plan sets out educational targets that your child is working on for the term in Literacy, Numeracy, PHSE and Science. This is not an exhaustive list of targets as we are constantly working on many different aspects of your child's development but these are areas of development that we place a heavier emphasis on and are incorporated across the whole curriculum. Plans are updated each term and sent home. If you would like example activities to help your child at home please let Katy or Janet know.
Reading Books
All children and young people are encouraged to engage in reading and develop a love of stories. We have a wide range of reading books, sensory books and big books to support the learning styles and levels for each child. Every Friday, your child will receive a new reading book. Please encourage your child to engage with the characters and stories.
P.E
P.E sessions take place each Thursday. Please ensure a full P.E kit is brought into school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. This can be left in school for the half term and we will send it home at the end of the half term for you to wash and return after the holiday.
Swimming sessions take place on Monday. Due to the number of pupils who require 1:1 support in the pool we have a rolling programme whereby we endeavour for each child to swim once a fortnight. Please can you send a costume/shorts and towel in each week in case a pupil is absent and we can take your child swimming for an additional session. If your child wears a pad please make sure you send an appropriate swim pad into school. Your child cannot enter the pool without wearing a swim pad if they do not use the toilet independently.
Summer Term 2017
Wow, can you believe it's the summer term already?! As always in Hedgehogs we have got some super exciting activities planned. Our themes for this term are 'The Ice Age' which is a Geography and Science based topic and 'The Egyptians' which is our History topic. Our stories will be based on colour and animals. We will be completing fun problem solving activities in numeracy and as ever all lessons will be taught in a sensory and engaging way.
Keep checking this class page for updates and snapshots of the fantastic work we do.
Spring Term 2017
Happy New Year!
We are back in school and ready to learn lots more and look forward to having fun whilst we do it!
This term our literacy focus will be on traditional and fairy tales. We will be reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and will be exploring a box book called Princesses. As you can imagine these stories provide a fantastic opportunity to focus on counting, making groups of three, exploring numerals, size and quantity in maths. In phonics we will be looking at the letter, sound and objects for k, u, b, f, e, l, h, sh and r.
Our themes will be 'Water, Water Everywhere' in the first half term and 'Vikings' in Spring 2.
In P.E we will focus on sending and receiving balls which will include rolling, kicking, following balls that are being moved around our bodies, sending balls down tubes, knocking over skittles and using these skills in simple cooperative game situations.
Before we know it we will be breaking up for Easter and enjoying lots of Easter activities and celebrations! So keep an eye out for photographs showing what we have been up to in Hedgehogs class, it's going to be a great term!
In the Autumn term we have been working hard and of course having fun!
In Literacy we have been listening to Bag Books stories (Maria's Ball and the story of Desmond). These stories have lots of objects linked to the story to explore, symbols/pictures and in some cases sounds and scents. Each week we have learnt a different sound and we explore objects beginning with each sound. Sounds for this term are m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, o and c. In phonics we work both as a whole class and in small groups to write new and previously learnt letters and sing our favourite song - 'Tap, Tap, Tap'. We learn best from sensory experiences like these and have so much fun sometimes we don't even realise it is 'work'!!
In Numeracy our focus has been on numbers and geometry (shape). We have enjoyed participating in number song sessions using objects for counting, printed and sensory numerals and games on the iPad and interactive white board. We love it when our teachers hide objects and shapes in sensory trays for us to find! We each have an IEP tray with activities linked to our numeracy targets. We spend quality time on a 1:1 basis with a teacher or teaching assistant working towards achieving these targets.
In Autumn term part 1 our theme was 'The Weather'. This was a geography based topic incorporating art, DT, science, numeracy and literacy.
We explored different types of weather, appropriate clothing and feelings of hot and cold in a multi sensory way. We also looked at different colours associated with different weather, for example yellow for the sun and blue for the rain. We produced the most amazing art work that we just had to show off to everyone! If you're passing our classroom check out our weather display with just some of the awesome things we have learnt!!
We began our P.E sessions this year exploring the range of P.E apparatus we have in school and showing a preference.
This half term we have narrowed our focus and been practising our balancing skills in gymnastics. We have been learning how to move around the room avoiding obstacles and move across low equipment.
In cookery we have focused on colours, textures and smells - linking into our PSHE and Numeracy work. We have used switches to operate mixers and blenders and have made delicious milkshakes in 3 flavours, angel delights and cakes. This week we made 'Spotty' cakes as it was Children in Need day.
