Welcome to Dragonflies Class

Dragonflies is the new class at The Rowan Tree, and this year we have welcomed 8 new children to our  new classroom.

We have already had lots of fun settling in to our new school and making new friends. Check back regularly to see what we have been doing.

 

Spring Term 2

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'Are Eggs Alive?'.

We will be looking at things that grow from eggs and beans, and all the wonderful spring flowers and animals.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'Jaspers Beanstalk', 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'Saving Easter'. Sensory props, food, songs and puppets will be used to encourage the children to engage with the stories.

Maths

In Maths we will be focusing on measurement, finding out who is the tallest and the smallest and measuring some plants as they grow. We will also begin to look at money, matching coins and maybe even spending some in our garden shop in class, we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Theme

During our topic lessons we will be looking at growing and planting and maybe even how caterpillars turn into Butterflies.

PE

P.E. sessions take place each Monday Afternoon for Dragonflies class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

Our topics for PE this half term will be ball skills, we will try throwing and catching, kicking and scoring goals and maybe even throwing into a bucket.

 

Cookery

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our spring topic and we will be making Butterfly cakes, Bean Burgers and of course Easter Nests.

Home Learning / Blended Learning

Spring Term 1

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'Where does snow go?'.

Hopefully we will have the opportunity to experience snow with our families and look at the weather changes over the coming weeks.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'Snowball', 'lost and found' and 'Polar bear, Polar bear, what can you hear?'. Sensory props, food, songs and puppets will be used to encourage the children to engage with the stories.

Maths

In Maths we will be focusing on shapes, looking at what shapes will make a snowman or a snowflake!, and Big and small, using different size circles to make snowmen, or triangles to make snowflakes, we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Theme

During our topic lessons we will be looking at hot and cold activities, snow versus a hot water bottle for example. Then floating and sinking, 'can we float a ball or a biscuit?' 'can we sink a pencil or paper?'

PE

P.E. sessions take place each Monday Afternoon for Dragonflies class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

Our topics for PE this half term will be races, moving with our feet together like a penguin, racing on our tummy's like a polar bear and lots of other fun races. we will also look at ball skills, throwing snowballs at a target or under a bridge.

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our spring topic and we will be making Oreo penguins, melting snowman biscuits and polar bear yoghurts.

On Friday afternoons we like to relax and enjoy the end of a busy week, maybe with a footspa and some relaxing music

Autumn Term 2

Curriculum

Welcome to all our new pupils in dragonflies class.

This half term our topic will be 'Why do leaves go crispy?'.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'we're going on a leaf hunt', 'when the leaf blew in', 'Dear Santa' and 'Father Christmas needs a Wee!'. Sensory props, food, songs and puppets will be used to encourage the children to engage with the stories.

Maths

In Maths we will be focusing on colours, looking at primary colours and mixing colours, along with our Maths boxes to consolidate our learning.

Theme

During our topic lessons we will be looking at seasons and weather. We will have lots of weather activities in class, with an inflatable sun, indoor snowballs and maybe a water spray, the children will look to find the appropriate clothes and items for each type of weather and what happens in the environment in each of the seasons.

PE

P.e. sessions take place each Monday Afternoon for Dragonflies class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

Our topics for PE this half term will be gymnastics, practising making large movements with ribbons and hoops and maybe a forward roll or two. We will also begin to look at yoga to stretch our muscles and relax after PE.

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our autumn topic and we will be making hedgehog bread, pinwheels and of course lots of Christmas food and drinks.

Autumn Term 1

Curriculum

Welcome to all our new pupils in dragonflies class.

This half term our topic will be 'Why can't we eat chocolate for breakfast?'.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'Kippers party', I will not ever, never eat a tomato', 'from head to toe' and 'a squash and a squeeze'. Sensory props, food, songs and puppets will be used to encourage the children to engage with the stories.

Maths

In Maths we will be looking at numbers, number recognition, number words and number bonds to name a few!

Theme

During our topic lessons we will be looking at healthy eating, growing up and making good choices. This will give us the opportunity to get to know our new friends better. Who is the tallest?, who is the smallest?, who has the biggest hands?, What is your favourite food? are just a few questions we will answer this half term.

PE

P.e. sessions take place each Monday Afternoon for Dragonflies class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

Our topics for PE this half term will be ball skills and balance. We will begin to take turns rolling, throwing and catching balls and bean bags, using a variety of equipment. We will also begin to promote balance skills, using benches, trails and hoops.

 

Cookery

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our healthy life theme we will be making fruit salad. We will encouraging independent chopping skills along with turn taking and sharing. The children will make fruit salad each week and the types and amounts of fruit will vary as the half term progresses.

We are brilliant at making lots of noise during Music.

General Information

We ask parents and carers to return the home/school diary each day, as this will enable the class teacher to provide comments and information about your child's day at school. If there are particular things you wish to be informed about, please speak to your class teacher.

 

Individual Education plans (IEP's)

this plan sets out educational targets that your child is working on for the term. There is a section in the plan which provides families and carers with activities or tasks you can do at home to support your child's learning. Plans are updated each term and sent home.

 

Reading books

(As we are not sending reading books home at the moment due to Covid please check out the home learning/ blended learning area of this page for some links to stories)

All children and young people are encouraged to engage in reading and developing a love of stories. We have a wide range of reading books, sensory books and big books to support the learning styles and levels for each child. Every Friday, your child will receive a reading book. Please encourage your child to engage with the characters and stories.

Class funds

We kindly request that you send in £2 a week. This contributes to any weekly resources such as sensory, cooking and snack that class might need.
