Welcome to Grasshopper class

 

Welcome to the Grasshoppers class.

We are a fun loving, lively and affectionate bunch of 8 KS1 pupils who enjoy being busy and learning new things. We love to use a variety of resources and props to help with our learning.

Each half term we will focus and learn about different topics within our subjects. See our long term plan to find out what fun is in store for us in the upcoming school year.

Snack in the Cafe and a visit to the Garden centre

Enjoying our sponsored walk yesterday, we even visited the Jungle! Well Blake called it the Jungle so we all agreed.

The Rowan Tree in the Foyer is beginning to look like a tree, the children have worked really hard so far. More pictures when its complete!

Summer Term 1

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'Can we explore it?'.

We will be exploring the Jungle this half term.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'From head to toe', 'Rumble in the jungle' and 'we.re going on a bear hunt'. We will enjoy a variety of sensory props, dressing up clothes and puppets to support our engagement with the stories.

Maths

This half term we will focus some of our time on heavy and light activities, we will be weighing items to find out what or who is the heaviest and what or who is the lightest. We will continue to spend time looking at subitising to 5 and  as always we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Understanding the World

During our Understanding the World lessons we will be matching adult to children animals, exploring the jungle habitats and even looking at maps to see where in the world the jungle is!

Travel Training

We will continue our travel training this half term by looking drawing a pedestrian crossing in the playground and practising our crossing skills. A few more walks around the local area to consolidate our learning.

PE

P.E. sessions take place each Wednesday Afternoon for Grasshoppers class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

This half term in PE we will continue to work on sports day games, hurdles and hockey to name a few. 

We have finished our visits to the climbing hanger for now and will try some outdoor gross motor activities instead, a visit or two to Rowan Adventure Park will be happening along with some other outdoor visits.

 

Cookery

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our topic, we will be making bear toast, snake sandwiches and snake pizza.

Our Last visit to the climbing hanger for a while, we'll be out and about during the summer term instead. Some parents may not want to look!

Spring Term 2

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'Can anyone be a superhero?'.

We will be looking at everyday heroes along with superheroes and even a supertato!

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'A hero like you', 'Supertato, veggies assemble' and 'Supertato, the great eggscape'. We will enjoy a variety of sensory props, dressing up clothes and puppets to support our engagement with the stories.

Maths

This half term we will focus some of our time on money, we will be shopping at the bakery to buy cakes, plastic and real. We will try to find the correct coin to buy our cakes with. We will also be looking at subitising and  as always we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Understanding the World

During our Understanding the World lessons we will be thinking about all the everyday heroes we meet in our daily lives. We will also continue to look at our personal hygiene including brushing our hair and teeth.

Travel Training

We will continue our travel training this half term by looking drawing a pedestrian crossing in the playground and practising our crossing skills. A few more walks around the local area to consolidate our learning.

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our topic and make super fruit foods, kebabs fruit salad and smoothies will be happening this half term.

Spring Term 1

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'How does that building stay up?'.

We will be building house with a variety of materials and checking what buildings stay up the longest.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction site, 'The 3 little pigs', and finishing with 'whatcha building?'. We will have lots of fun activities to go with our stories including construction vehicles, 3 pigs houses and even a chicken coop.

Maths

This half term we will focus some of our time on patterns, copying patterns, continuing patterns and even making patterns with bricks, as always we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Understanding the World

During our Understanding the World lessons we will looking at all different types of buildings, including igloos and mud huts. We will even try to make our own building with mini bricks and mortar. We will also begin to look at our personal hygiene including brushing our hair and teeth.

Travel Training

We will continue our travel training this half term by looking at pedestrian crossing and when it is safe to cross the road, we will also go on a little walk in the local area.

PE

P.E. sessions take place each Wednesday Afternoon for Grasshoppers class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

This half term in PE we will be working on relay games. waiting and taking turns. Then we will progress onto dress up relay games.

We will also continue to visit The Climbing Hanger this half term, we will attend on a rota with other classes from the Rowan Tree, we are all really excited to continue this.

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our topic and make Jelly igloos, gingerbread houses and even some chocolate lego houses.

Autumn Term 2

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'Why can't we touch the stars?'.

We will be making stars and rockets, building aliens and enjoying some junk modelling.

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'Whatever next!, 'Aliens love underpants', 'goodnight spaceman' and we will finish with a Christmas story ' Dear Santa'. We will have lots of fun activities to go with our stories including puppets, sensory exploration trays and even some underpants!

Maths

This half term we will focus some of our time on numbers and number recognition, shapes and colours, as always we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Understanding the World

During our Understanding the World lessons we will try to remember the names of the planets in our solar system, go to the moon in a cardboard box rocket for a picnic and enjoy some experiments with rockets.

Travel Training

We will continue our travel training this half term by looking at pedestrian crossing and when it is safe to cross the road, we will also go on a little walk in the local area.

This half term in PE we will be working on copying games the children will select a movement or yoga pose and the other children and staff will copy.

We will also start attending The Climbing Hanger this half term, we will attend on a rota with other classes from the Rowan Tree, we are all really excited to begin this new adventure.

 

Cookery

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our topic and make star sandwiches, each week we will choose our filling, make the sandwich and cut it into a star shape. Towards the end of the term we will make some delicious Christmas baked goodies.

Autumn Term 1

Curriculum

This half term our topic will be 'What is a shadow?'.

We will be making and drawing around shadows, looking at night and day and making our shadows big and small..

Literacy

In Literacy the books we will cover this half term are, 'The shape of me and other stuff', 'The very lonely Firefly' and 'the Gruffalos child'. We will have lots of fun activities to go with our stories including puppets, sensory exploration trays and maybe some fake snow.

Maths

This half term we will focus some of our time on numbers and number recognition, shapes and colours, as always we will continue to consolidate our learning with individual Maths boxes.

Understanding the World

During our understanding the World lessons we will try to make shadows, look at the things we can only see during the day and try to decide what happens at day time and night time.

Travel Training

We will begin to work on some travel training ideas this half term by going outside and looking at what we can see in the street, what signs can we find, are there any cars or buses and what things are written on the road.

PE

P.E. sessions take place each Wednesday Afternoon for Grasshoppers class. please ensure a full PE kit is brought to school and that items are clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Swimming sessions will take place on a Monday. ( I will inform you when this will start)

This half term in PE we will be working on stop and go games wo link in with our travel training, we will stop when we see a red sign and go when we see a green sign.

 

Cookery

We do cookery every Thursday morning, please let us know if your child has any food allergies, and this half term to continue with our topic and make biscuits and pumpkins. We will measure out the ingredients, mix and cut our biscuits and put them in the oven.
