The Ladybirds Class

Autumn Term 1

Our first topic of the New Year will be learning all about ‘Ourselves’. We will also be settling back into our class routine, getting to know new friends, sharing toys and working on our independent skills now that we are Key Stage 1. This half term also includes a Harvest Festival Assembly. We hope you can join us.

Here is what we will be doing in our different subjects:

  • English:

Our shared class storybooks will be 'The Toy’s Party', ‘The Wobbly Tooth', 'Funny Bones' and ‘From Head to Toe’. We will also have other books in our Reading Corner to look at and engage with about our five senses and emotions. We will use many different resources to bring the stories alive such as puppets and the actual food in The Toy’s Party. We will be encouraged to join in with the stories in our own way – remembering what has happened or is going to happen, discussing and naming what is happening in the pictures. We will also be working on our fine motor control and mark making as well as our Individual Education Plan English Targets.

  • Maths:

We will be continuing to develop our maths skills through a combination of our Individual Education Plan targets for Maths, small group work and exploration of maths resources.

Our overall focus this half term is measurement – length and mass.

  • Theme:

Our topic for our theme afternoon this half term is Ourselves. It is based around the History topic ‘The Passage of Time – Me’ and ‘Toys and Games - Mine, My Parents and Grandparents’. Theme will also incorporate art and design. We will be looking at how we have grown and changed over the years and will be looking at pictures of what we looked like as babies. We will also be looking at toys and how they have changed. Maybe making our toys!

  • PE & Swimming:

We love swimming in Ladybirds so we will keeping trying to improve our independence and kicking skills in the water. During our PE sessions, we will continue to work on our coordination and balance, jumping and throwing and catching.

  • Science:

We will also be incorporating our Ourselves topic and will be exploring and using our senses, looking at features of the human face and parts of the body as well as different ways we can move our bodies. We will also start to look at the differences between animals and humans.

  • PSHE:

We will be learning about developing a healthy and safer lifestyle. We will be learning and developing our self-help skills such washing, teeth cleaning and toilet routines.

Don't forgot to keep coming back on and checking what we've been up too.

General Information

Home School Dairies

We ask families and carers to return the home / school diary each day, as this will enable the class staff to provide comments and information about your child’s day in school. If there are particular things you wish to be informed about, please speak with the class teacher.

Individual Education Plans (IEP’s)

These set out the priority educational targets that your child is working on for the term. IEPs are updated each term and sent home. If there is anything that you would particularly like us to working on please just let us know.

Reading Books

All children and young people are encouraged to engage in reading and develop a love of stories. We have a wide range of reading books, sensory books and big books to support the learning styles and levels for each child. Every Friday, your child will receive a new reading book. Please encourage your child to engage with the characters and stories and fill in the reading record to let your child's class staff know how the have gotten on.

Magic Moment Books

Your child will also be sent home with a Magic Moments Book. This is an exciting way to share all the wonderful things that your child does at home. Its also a way to record any special moments, anything that your child does for the first time and anything that they enjoy doing. We would also love it if you could send the book back in at the end of a half term or after a holiday so that we could share your child's amazing achievements.

Snack and Cookery Money

We kindly request that you send in £2 a week. This will go towards snack and cookery ingredients that we use each week.
